There is a direct train from Paignton and a return costs around £12 per person. The picturesque journey takes about an hour and a half passing through Exeter, hugging the coast at Dawlish and through the quaint seaside town of Topsham.

Alternatively, a 40 minute drive will get you to Exmouth, the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. There is plenty of paid parking in the town costing about £1 per hour or at weekends you can park in the Cricket Club for £5 for the day.

Walking from the Cricket Club towards the seashore you will pass The Maer Nature Reserve made up of sand dunes. It is used extensively by walkers and dogs and if you keep your eyes peeled you might be able to see or hear one of the few pairs of remaining Skylarks.

It is a great spot for picnics and areas of the beach are dog friendly. There is a huge choice of water sports on offer in Exmouth particularly kite-surfing, kayaking and wind surfing.  You can hire equipment and book lessons locally – Edge Watersports is located on the seafront.

For families ‘Queens Drive Space’ is a great place to head for. There is a Jurassic themed play park – including a gigantic dinosaur and there are a number of stands serving local food and produce (including a bar for older members of the party!) although you are welcome to bring your own food and make use of the picnic benches. There is also an ‘event space’ which this summer will be hosting a fun fair, miniature railway and other children’s attractions.
