With the Christmas Tree up (insert image) and the school holidays just around the corner we are starting to get very excited about Christmas in Paignton! We got our tree from Marldon Christmas farm and choosing it is a treat in itself! At the farm not only can you choose your tree but there are market stalls, reindeer, festive train rides and Santa visit – the hot chocolate and cakes served in the cafe next to stoked wood burners is delicious!
This weekend we are really getting into the spirit of the season with a host of fun packed Christmas activities.
On Friday night we are going to the Palace Theatre to see the award winning Paignton Pantomime Productions showing of Sleeping Beauty – oh yes we are! We have been lucky enough to see their show for the last two years and have always been entertained! Alice loves everything about it! The histrionics, the audience participation, the singing, the dancing! We love to see her face light up but are also treated to some more adult orientated jokes!
At half time we enjoy a drink from the bar and some delicious local ice-cream.
First thing Saturday (after breakfast of course) we will take a refreshing walk along Paignton sands. When the tide is out it is the perfect place for a dog to stretch their legs and for us to enjoy the sea air – it reminds us why we moved here!
On Saturday morning at 11am we will board the Santa Express something which has become an annual treat for our family. The Dartmouth Steam Railway departs Paignton for a round trip to Kingswear. During the journey the children are entertained by an on board pantomime which moves through each carriage and this is followed up by a visit from the big man himself – Santa with a gift for each child. Adults are treated to spectacular sea views, mulled wine and a mince pie!
Winner of local and regional awards the service becomes the ‘Train of Lights‘ as dusk falls.
We plan to follow this trip with a festive afternoon tea. We will take the bus to Torquay and visit Pier Point Restaurant Overlooking the sea front and harbour we plan to fill ourselves with festive sandwiches, mince pies, pigs in blankets and brie & cranberry tartlets and may even treat ourselves to a glass of fizz! We often walk to or from Torquay and may need the hour long stroll to walk this off!
On Sunday we are planning a family day out at Cockington Court including Bea our cockapoo! Cockington is a great British country park where you can watch cricket in the summer, explore the craft studios year round (a great place we have found for out of the ordinary Christmas gifts!) and explore the grounds with your pooch. We will first follow the Snowflake Trail trying to find sculptural snowflakes designed and decorated from the craft makers on site and scattered by Jack Frost! After this we will head to The Drum to warm up by the fire and enjoy some good pub grub!
At the end of the day we will retire to St Weonards. We will sit in front of our Christmas Tree and watch our favourite Christmas movie – The Polar Express. A relaxing way to end the perfect festive weekend in Paignton.
Wishing all the very best for the festive season – it might even be a white one!
